Visiting the Riviera Maya

We recently spent a few days in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. This area is part of the Riviera Maya which extends from Puerto Morelos past Tulum near the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. The area has many white sand beaches to relax on or many water activities, such as snorkeling near one of the largest barrier reef systems or cruising on a catamaran or sail boat. The average water temperature is 79 degrees, so anytime is a good time to take a swim.

The area is easily accessible from the Cancun International airport (CUN) and is located roughly right between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. There are many resorts to choose from in the area, we stayed at NOW Sapphire. This all-inclusive resort which is located on a lush tropical mangrove reserve was beautiful and offered many amenities. NOW Sapphire has 6 ¨reservation free¨ restaurants, with Asian, French, Mediterranean, Seafood and Mexican cuisines. Not having to make a nightly reservation, and no limit to how many nights you can visit each restaurant was a plus for us, as this is not usually the case at other all-inclusive resorts http://www.nowresorts.com/sapphire/gourmet-dining .

The room accommodations were nice and spacious. Both the Ocean front and tropical views rooms start at 520 square feet and have a seating area, soaking tub and King size or two queen size beds. The Ocean front rooms have an outdoor hot tub on the terrace. I would not recommend these rooms on the ground level because there is no privacy from the beach when on the terrace. But if you want to be able to walk right out of your room onto the terrace you may enjoy the ground level room .

We chose to upgrade to the Preferred Club rooms, these rooms are all Ocean front (not all Ocean view) and have upgraded amenities, such as in room mini bar, 24 hour room service access, check in and out at the preferred club lounge, WiFi included and the ability to reserve a cabana or chairs at the pool or beach. The rate was only a few dollars more per night, I think it was totally worth it.

There are several bars and lounges in the resort all included in your rate. There is also nightly entertainment, such as dance shows, live music and even salsa lessons. If you are traveling with children the Explorers club offers many activities for the children and is open daily from 9:30 am to 9:30 pm . There is also a ¨Core Zone¨ for teens with activities for them as well . We made our reservations through Bookit.com

Near the resort is the quant fishing village of Puerto Morelos. Here you can grab lunch or shop for local goods. The town has two main streets and you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes. You can also take a tour or an hour car ride if you have a rental to visit the sea front Mayan ruins of Tulum

or about half hour further to Coba which is an ancient Mayan city in the jungle with a 138 foot pyramid you can climb. Another cool day trip is to visit and swim in a ¨Cenote¨, a sinkhole in the earths surface. Some of the more notable cenotes are Grand Cenote, Cenote Dos Ojos and Ik Kil which is closer to Chizen Itza and furthest from the Riviera Maya area.

If you prefer more lively nightlife Cancun’s hotel zone is about 30 minutes North and offers many clubs, bars and restaurants to choose from

The area has much to offer, whether you enjoy relaxing, history or nightlife you can find it all in the Riviera Maya!
